By far the best hotel rates are found online!
We’re negotiating additional discounts with smaller bed and breakfasts. However, even those deals will usually cost much more than booking a hotel room online.
Overview
Currently the majority of out-of-state volunteers will be working out of the main office in Portland. However, your activities will bring you to different satalite offices, staging locations and event sites. So, don’t book your hotel simply based on proximity to the main office. The nearest hotel under $100 is approximately 2.5 miles away from the office. Thus, having access to a vehicle and/or sharing a car with another individual is helpful!

Note on getting to and from campaign sites: Having a car or making arrangements to share access to a car will make your life much, much easier. Portland’s transit system is simply too small to be able to get you where you need to be at the right time. Talk to your travel coordinator to see if they can help you find someone to split the cost of a rental car. (Up to five people may share a car. More can share a van.)
Room Sharing is a great idea:
Please list your request in the notes section on your interest form and tell your travel coordinator when we contact you to verify the details of your trip. If there are others who would also like to share a room, we will forward your email address and phone to other travelers who will be participating during the same week.
For accommodations, two websites are by far the most helpful:
- Most rooms are double occupancy, 2 full-size beds.
- Generally there is an extra change for more than four people in a room.
- Sometimes there is an extra change for more than two.
- Local taxes and fees: $1 to 4/night/person.
- Additional hotel charges: $0 to $10/night/person
1st Choice: KAYAK – Kayak simultaneously searches all five major travel sites (Hotwire, Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline and Hotels.com. We’ve found that Kayak has slightly more listings than Bing (see below). In fact, the $29/night listing below is only available on Kayak. We’ve also found that prices on Kayak are slightly lower than Bing. However, we encourage you to check both Kayak and Bing before booking.
2nd Choice: BING – Bing also simultaneously searches all major online travel sites. While the prices on average are slightly higher we encourage you to check both Bing and Kayak before booking.

If you need supporter housing:
We have a limited amount of spaces in the homes of local volunteers. They are excited to open their homes to folks who could not otherwise afford to travel to campaign with us. If you need supporter housing simply indicate it on the sign-up form. However, please check into sharing a hotel room with other volunteers. As great as it is to stay with a local volunteer, sharing a hotel room of your own can often be more convenient for you. We can help make this possible.
